It’s a cruelty free beauty subscription box and contains a selection of five products – skincare, body care, makeup and occasionally a sweet treat too. Plus, a 50p donation from the sale of each box goes to an animal friendly charity (Animal Free Research). In addition, you earn loyalty points for each purchase which can then be used for money off future boxes.

What was in my box?

The box came with an information card to tell me all about the products inside and their value.

Green People: Sun Lotion SPF 15 (sheet lists price as £6)

As a redhead, I do appreciate sun lotion although this SPF is a lot lower than I use. I will likely give this to my husband or wait until it is mot quite so hot to use.

The product has natural ingredients for UV filters, antioxidants and tan accelerator. It came with a booklet about their other sun products including a Childrens range.

Make-up Eraser: Mini Travel Cloth (sheet lists price as £5)

The sample version hasn’t got the seen edges and warns it may fray. Instantly loved the redhead mermaid on the packaging.

It is for removing makeup using only water. I’ve added it to my hospital bag as it sounds like a great idea. Although, I’m barely wearing makeup at the moment.

On their site they have other designs including some with pretty patterns.

Peony: Matcha BB Powder SPF 15 (sheet lists price as £16.99)

I love make-up with spf so I am looking forward to trying this powder to reduce shine and add some protection. It is a talc-free too.

Vintage Cosmetics: Betty false eyelashes (sheet lists price as £6)

They claim to give you almond shape eyes and can be used up to four times. I’m hoping to get a family pic done once baby is here and will use these lashes to give me that extra oomph at the shoot. They offer free shipping to UK and US.

La Ritzy: Black eye pencil (she lists price as £15)

I tried it right away and it gave a rich black colour and applied smoothly. It didn’t irritate my sensitive eyes. The brand is vegan and paraben free.

This is how I got on using the products from my June box:

Zerreau: Coconut Towel Off Shampoo (sheet lists price as £3.99)

There were some great videos of others using this but for me it wasn’t great. It made my hair looking cleaner but I didn’t like the feel. I’m sure I’ll use it up but I won’t buy it. It’s not for me.

Dermadeli: Rejuvinating Toner (sheet lists price as £1.50)

It is empty! That’s got to be a sign that I loved it. I used it on hot days to freshen my face and on a few occasions my husband and son asked for a quick spritz. I plan buy this again – may even get the bigger size.

LaRitzy: NUE Eyeshadow Palette (sheet lists prove as £35.99)

I’m not in love with this palette and won’t buy again. I found the colours were not very pigmented and didn’t show up well on my pale skin.

Hurraw: Sun Lip Balm SPF15 (sheet lists price as £3.99)

I was very pleased with this product. The SPF causes a slight paleness to the lip but it feels good and I like that it has protection. This is a favourite.

The Vintage Cosmetics: Matchbox Mini Emery Boards (sheet lists price as £3.95)

I’ve not needed to use these yet but they are a useful product to have and will get used in time.

Chewsy: 100% Natural Chewing Gum (sheet lists price as £1.25)

This sticky gum tasted yum. It didn’t last long as I ate it quickly. I’ve not seen it in shops and I doubt I’d order it online but I would love to have it again.

Would I recommend?

I’ve cancelled my subscription – only because I’m not on maternity leave and need to be more careful with my spending. I will resubscribe to The Pip Box in the future as I really like the reward scheme, supporting a charity and discovering cruelty-free brands.

I plan to look back over my past boxes and work out what was great or not.

What’s in my maternity hospital bag?

With my first I left packing my bag until the day I went into labour and although I’ve tried to be more organised this time, it’s still not fully packed.

My bag is an overnight bag using an old small suitcase, the sort you can take on a cheap flight as carry on luggage. I’m not planning on staying in longer unless there is a complication. If that happens, my hubby can bring me more stuff.

For labour

Hypnobirthing Parents’ Workbook: RRP £10.00

We bought this book as part of the free antenatal course delivered by our local midwives. Click here to read my article about hypnobirthing.

Neom: Aromatherapy mist – RRP £8.00

I wasn’t sure which scent to buy so got one of each to try. Most aromatherapy oils seem to be a pippet liquid oil or roller ball pulse point. I liked the idea of a mist as I can spritz the air or some fabric. I also got their mini hand creams to try.

Kindle fire: It was a gift but google says about £50.00

As my hubby has amazon prime we were able to download the music used during our hypnobirth course for free. It will also double up as entertainment as I can read, watch movies, play games and browse the internet.

Snacks: Various

Currently, these are my emergency snacks from my locker at work – I brought them home on my last day. I’m planning on ordering a graze box as I got free vouchers in my bounty packs. I really fancied JOM Candy but it’s not easy to buy.

Joseph Joseph: water bottle – £9.00 but I think I got mine half price in a sale.

The bottle never leaks and I like the clicks feature. Keeping hydrated during labour is very important.

Scarf: Bought years ago by a friend years ago when popular as sarong and shawls. These can be used during labour to do the Rebozo techniques.

Stay Cool Ice Towel: Whilst shopping for a fan I saw this and it sounds amazing. You just add water and it stays cool for hours. It is used by sporty people but I’m going to use it in labour. It is currently on order as I had to wait until pay day but I’m hoping it will arrive in time.

Travel brush & hair bands: When it gets hot, it is useful to tie my hair back. Also, handy to make myself look presentable when I get cleaned up afterwards.

For baby

M&Co: Seven piece start set – RRP £18.00

The trickiest thing is guessing what size your baby will be. With my first I had tiny baby and newborn clothes. He was 8 pounds 12 ounces and fit in newborn clothes for a week.

This time, all I’ve packed is a set from M&Co in size newborn. This set is great value for money and all you need. It consists of a vest, top, trousers, sleepsuit, two bibs and a hat.

Kit & Kin: Size 1, panda, pack of 20 – RRP £4.00

I got these eco nappies from Boots so I could collect my club card points. I’ve got a few different nappies but these are hands down the cutest.

Organyc: Cotton wool pads – RRP £2.48

Newborn skin is so sensitive and you should use only water to clean their bums for as long as possible. You’ll get told to use cotton wool balls but they can get stuck to sticky poo – the first baby poo is like black tar. I found the pads much better.

Naty: Sensitive wipes (unscented) – RRP £2.95

I plan to use cotton wool and water to clean her bum but packed these just in case things get messy. They are eco friendly and only use safe ingredients. I got them in an ambassador deal (click here to learn more).

The Little Art Collection: Poppy Muslim – RRP £12.50

Mopping up baby sick is one of the unglamorous tasks of being a mum but this beautiful muslin makes it so much better. It is super soft and I plan use it for swaddling, as a blanket or feeding cover up. It’s too pretty for sick (except if the bibs run out).

Hipp Organic: Combiotic first infant milk (6x 90ml booties with teats) – RRP £8.00

I’m planning to breast feed again but got these incase I can’t. If I’m going to give my baby formula I want chemical free and as natural as possible. In addition, these pre-made bottles are sterilised and ready when you are. With Noah, I kept these in my changing bag for emergencies like if a creepy man kept staring – thankfully it never happened. It did come in useful when I left him with my mum and a leaky bottle of expressed milk. The lid wasn’t on tight and my milk was lost, luckily my mum was able to use one of these.

For me

Happy Mama: Breast feeding nightdress – RRP £11.62

There was also a matching robe but I remember how hot the ward was in November, so I expect it will be hotter than hell in August. The less layers the better.

Cottons: Maternity pads with wings – RRP £3.95

Buying sanitary products is never exciting but I got mine from My Pure. This online store knocks £5 off of you buy five products (encourages you to stock up). In addition, they have a selection of free gifts if you spend £30 in one transaction. I got a Madara face peel mask (RRP £24) and the next time I chose the PHB Ethical Beauty pressed eye shadow (RRP £9.99). It certainly made me more excited to get my order.

Breast pad:

Lansinoh – free samples from bounty
Little lamb – £11.25 washable pads
Theraline Mamma Pads – £9 reusable invisible pressure pads (sticks to skin and prevents leaks whilst sleeping)

Last time, I found the washable pads brilliant as they were so absorbent and saved me money or having to keep ordering pads. The only issue I had was leaking in the night, so, I’m hoping Theraline will be the answer to that little problem.

Book: Who runs the world – RRP £7.99

I bought this at FBF after the author talk. It’s set in the future and about a world where a virus has almost wiped all men out so most women have never seen one. Click here to read my post about this book.

Note pad with pen: Various/Gifts

I don’t think I’m allowed to charge my kindle or phone at hospital (except for the purpose of hypnobirthing), plus there may be no WiFi! So, I will take some offline resources to enjoy.

Disaster Designs: Boho Make-up bag – £24.95

I actually don’t own a make up bag as I rarely take makeup out with me. This was a treat to myself and very pretty. I don’t intend to wear much makeup whilst in hospital, so all I have packed is:

Whilst treating myself to the makeup bag, I had to get the matching wash bag which is so spacious. Inside, I will pack:

I’ve been collecting sample/travel sizes from my subscription boxes to save space in my bag. I also hope I won’t need to use the dry shampoo or deodorant wipes but they are just incase I need to freshen up and can’t wait to use the facilities (festival style).

Coming home outfit: I’ve packed a black nursing vest that doesn’t need a bra and a black floral maxi skirt with a stretchy waist band. I’ve packed three pairs of big comfy knickers.

My hubby can bring more if I stay longer but I’m so big now that most my maternity clothes are limited and in constant use. If I stay in, he’ll just bring me whatever’s clean (and may have to do laundry).

Coming home

Car seat: This time we bought a travel system and got the MeeGo Milano. The car seat is part of the package.

Baby hat: As it is August, I won’t be dressing her in a coat but she does need a hat (hospital rule) to be allowed to leave. As there’s one in the M&Co set, we’re sorted.

Review: Skin Organics Beauty Box (July)

What is it?

First impressions on July’s edit:

Lola’s Apothecary: Delicate Romance Perfume Delux Roll On (sheet lists price as £20.00)

This is a multi-tasking product that can be used a perfume, aromatherapy or body oil. It is packed with ingredients that are good for your skin and can treat dull dry skin, stretch marks, ageing, redness, inflammation and has antiseptic properties. It has natural sources of omega 3, 6 and 9 and Vitamin E.

It sounds very impressive and I looks so pretty with the dried flowers floating inside.

Odylique: Lip Liner – Rose (sheet lists price as £12.50)

First to achieve certified soil Association and Fairtrade standards for their lip pencils, this is 100% natural and uses sustainable sourced wood. I’ve not tried this brand before and on viewing their website I can see they have a baby range…

I haven’t used a lip pencil in years so I’ll probably need to look up how to use it to check I’m doing it right. It is a very pretty colour.

Green People: The price of the sample size is not listed on the sheet.

Damask Rose Facial Oil (full size 30ml is £29 on website)

Damask Rose Moisturiser (full size 30ml is £20 on website)

I do really like rose so I’m keen to try this oil and moisturiser. I do have a few oils on the go but if I throw this into my hospital bag to try when I am staying overnight as it is a perfect travel size. This product is something I’ve considered buying in the past so I am really pleased to see it in my box and to finally use it.

Weleda: The price of the sample size is not listed on the sheet.

Wild Rose Creamy Body Wash (full size 50ml is £3.95 and 200ml is £7.95 on website)

Wild Rose Body Oil (full size 100ml is £25.95 on website)

I’ve always admired Weleda because the brand brings good ingredients and very competitive and affordable prices. I’m looking forward to giving these a try. They would be ideal in my hospital bag but I do already have a wash and oil packed…

Zenon Kition: Floral Beauty Mist (sheet lists price as £9.99)

It is 100% pure rose water and can be used on hair or skin to nourish and soothe. It can help with acne and rosacea and to be used after cleansing as a toner or on hair to strengthen. It can calm the mind from stress, anxiety and sleeping problems.

At the moment, any facial mist is my best friend. I am spritzing like it is going out of fashion. It is all that is getting me through this heatwave. To know this product has all the additional benefits and is full of good ingredients is an amazing bonus that is going to make me feel even better using it.

Balm Kind: Alpine Rose & Lysine Lip Balm (sheet lists price as £12.00)

This product is fully of natural ingredients and very hydrating with a gentle shine. Ingredients can reduce the occurrence of cold sores. Checking out this website it appears to be their only product – I think it is great to be supporting the start of UK business and it has already won an award as Finalist in the Beauty Shortlist Awards 2018!

I don’t suffer from cold sores but I do love a balm. I did apply this today and it came out a little oily which may be caused by the heat. I am going to try it again and obviously share how I get on in a months time.

Alteya Organics: Age Defense Certified Organic Hand Cream (sheet lists price as £6.20)

This hand cream is designed to fight the signs of ageing and discoloration but I am eyeing it up as a useful changing bag essential. It is 100% natural and promises to be easily absorbed and non-greasy. I am looking forward to putting it to the test.

Would I recommend?

Sadly, this is likely to be my last box for a little while as I am about to go onto maternity pay. However, what a beautiful box to end on.

I love the scent of rose and hoping that all of these products will become firm favourites. I know I will get a lot of use out of the mist because every day at the moment I am misting to keep cool. I also think the hand cream will be incredible useful in the weeks to come.

All the products meet the promise of clean, green and cruelty-free – so if that’s something you desire, this is a great box for you.

I’ve had a month to use the products I received and share my thoughts.

This is how I got on using the products from my April box:

Sadly, I have been a bit stressed at work and returning home too exhausted to even pamper myself which has resulted in some products not getting used as expected. In addition, the past two weekends my little boy has been ill which steals my time and energy. Hopefully, June will be a better month and I’ll find a little bit of ‘me’ time.

Sofia Latif: Facial Oil (sheet lists price as £20.00)

Currently, I have too many facial oils so I’ve not had a chance to try this out yet.

Bowe Organics: Organic Lash Oil (sheet lists price as £19.99)

This month I got a lash lift and tint but before I did I gave this go. I don’t think I used it long enough to really notice a difference. It is a yellow oil and feels very natural and very hydrating. It did not irritate my eyes so that is good. I think once my tint has gone I’ll give this another go to see if it does make my lashes longer and fuller. I put it on before bed.

The Cosy Cottage: Mango Butter & Lemon Foot Balm (sheet lists price as £5.00)

My feet have been swelling so badly in these final weeks of pregnancy and during a heatwave. My husband has given me a foot massage more than once to help and it smells good and brought the swelling down. I love this product… and foot massages.

Lucidlure: Allava Hair Mask (sheet lists price as £5.50)

I’ve not used this. It has been so hot my hair has felt sweaty and gross. The last thing I want to do is put a mask on it. I’ve saved this treatment for the end of summer when the heatwave is over.

Bespoke Aroma:

Refreshing Peppermint Facial Mist (sheet lists price as £4.25)

I am loving this. Peppermint is a lovely refreshing smells that perks me up. In this heat, I am loving anything I can spritz on my face and cool myself down. It is so good!

Peppermint & Lemongrass Pulse Point Oil (sheet lists price as £4.25)

I honestly can’t believe that I have managed to catch a cold in this heat wave. I struggled through my last day at work and today but this product has made it possible. I am determined to kick this cold before the baby arrives which is any day now (due next Saturday)!

Review product from my Naturismo box

The Healing makeup discover box (worth £70)

Back in June, I did a first impressions post of the Naturismo box I purchased. Click here to see the post.

I’ve been using the products for just over a month now and feel I am in a good position so say how I got on with using them and what I liked, or didn’t like. Here we go:

Dr Hauschka: Lip Gloss (raspberry)

I won’t rebuy this. I like colour on my lips and this is too natural for me. It gives a little gloss but doesn’t last long. It’s not tacky and actually feels very moisturising.

Bellapierre Cosmetics: Blush (Autumn Glow)

I won’t buy this because it is so orange on me, it is more like a bronzer. The product is very pigmented so I think I would enjoy other shades by this brand and plan to check them out in future.

Inika Organic: Certified Organic Lip Tint (Candy)

It feels more like a balm than a tint. The colour is a very pale nude and doesn’t last long on my lips. I’ll use it for natural days but I won’t rebuy.

RMS Beauty: “Un” Powder

The sample pot is quite small which makes it tricky to get the powder out. I like the little powder puff but I found I prefer applying it with a brush. It did highlight the dry skin on my nose so unless I need my make up to last a few hours, I didn’t find myself reaching for this. I don’t think I will rebuy this powder but I really liked having the opportunity to try it as it has been on my wish list for a long time.

Odacite: Black Mint Cleanser

I really like this cleanser. It didn’t make it into my hospital bag because I tried it once and liked it so much that I started using it every day and it has almost run out. I’d like to rebuy this but it’s not cheap. I found the zingy minty freshness really good in the morning and my skin feels so clean after using it.

Pacifica Beauty: Stellar Gaze mascara (black)

I can never have enough black mascara. As my eyes are quite sensitive in this heat and keep watering I did have an issue with this mascara running. I had to go back to my trusty Pacifica waterproof version. However, I wore it on a night out and it was fine. I think I will keep it in the draw ready for the cooler months. I would buy this again.

REN Skincare: Flash Defence Anti- Pollution Mist

This was the first empty. I really liked this toner and found it so refreshing. I would want to rebuy this product. I am also very tempted by their Glow AHA Tonic as it reminds me of Glow by Pixi. Now, I have found the brands products effective I am interested in trying more by them.

Estelle & Thild: Sample sachets

Tinted moisturiser: I suspected that this would not be light enough but I tried the tinted moisturiser and I really like. The colour is perfect and my skin looks so healthy. Its very sheer so I still need a concealer for blemishes but in this hot weather a tinted moisturiser is all I want. I am pleasantly surprised and interested in buying this again.

Summary

I am pleased that I got to try these products out. It had helped me discover new brands and try items from my wish list. I have been surprised by some products and disappointed by others, however, at only £2.50 each it was a very affordable way to discover what is right for me.

Sofia Latif: Facial Oil (sheet lists price as £20.00)

This product was shortlisted for the Free From Skincare Awards 2018. This is a night oil that you can use to massage you cleansed face before bed and lift your senses. You can also add a drop to your morning moisturizer.

I have got a lot of facial oils at the moment but I will try it out before the end of the month so I can let you know how I got on with it.

Bowe Organics: Organic Lash Oil (sheet lists price as £19.99)

This product was also shortlisted for the Free From Skincare Awards 2018. You massage the oil into clean dry lashes and it helps them become thicker and longer.

It sounds very promising. I will need to get using this right away as I’ve booked in for a lash tint and lift at the end of the month and I’m not sure I can use it after that.

The Cosy Cottage: Mango Nutter & Lemon Foot Balm (sheet lists price as £5.00)

An intense foot balm to smooth and hydrate feet with mango butter, coconut oil, aloe vera and lemon oil.

I’m hoping this smells so good that I can entice my husband into giving me a foot rub *fingers crossed*.

Lucidlure: Allava Hair Mask (sheet lists price as £5.50)

This hair mask is suitable for all hair types. You can either leave it on for 2 hours or over night for a deep condition.

I have never used a hair mask before. I’m excited to see how I get on and whether this is something I should add to my beauty regime.

Bespoke Aroma:

Refreshing Peppermint Facial Mist (sheet lists price as £4.25)

This is a floral water for refreshing your face throughout the day to pick you up when feeling sluggish in the heat.

I recently bought the Naturismo limited edition box which included Odacite, black Mint Cleanser. I’ve found the cleanser to be an amazing refreshing way to start the day and love the minty smell. That’s why I think I am going to get on well with this facial mist. Plus, it is just what I need in this hot weather and being heavily pregnant.

Peppermint & Lemongrass Pulse Point Oil (sheet lists price as £4.25)

This is for sharpening your senses and to treat headaches. Also helps treat cold or flu, jet lag, and combat tiredness and stress. Simply apply to pulse points.

This sounds really good and just what I need as I am finding it increasingly hard to stay awake at work by the afternoon – I am counting down the days to maternity leave (24 July – not long now).

Would I recommend?

Yes, another amazing selection of high quality products and by brands I’ve not heard of before.

I’m keen to use the Bespoke Aroma products and can’t believe how affordable they are. I’m looking forward to using the foot butter. I’ve never used a hair mask or lash oil, so I am unsure how I’ll get on with those. I never would have thought to buy them. My bathroom cabinet is full of facial oil, I doubt I’ll get around to using this one this month.

A.S Apothecary: Wild Beauty Balm (website lists price at £42 for 30mls & sheet lists price as £21.00)

This has easily been my favourite product in this box. It is quite pricey so I am not sure if I will be able to afford it on maternity leave but it definitely will be on my wish list.

Just Be Botanicals: Loved Aromatherapy Chocolate (website & sheet lists price as £2.75)

I knew right away that this wouldn’t be for me as I don’t enjoy the bitter taste of dark chocolate. However, it is the most beautiful chocolate I have ever seen. It has rose petals within the bar and looks very elegant.

I’m going to share give it to my mum (she won’t mind that I had a little nibble). She’s not usually a chocolate person but does indulge sometimes in dark chocolate, plus, I need to find out how her holiday went.

Isla Apothecary: Neroli Body oil (website lists price as £32 for 100mls & sheet lists price as £4.50)

This is the sort of cleanser I do really love but I’ve got a few cleansers on the go at the moment so I’ve decided to save this one for later in the year. I’m afraid I haven’t tried it out.

Roques O’Neil: Himalayan Detox Bath Salts (website and sheet lists price as £10.00 travel size)

A salt bath is very healing so this is in the draw in my bathroom ready for a relaxing bath when I return from hospital. I remember feeling very sensitive after delivering my son and a salt bath did help soothe and make me feel better.

Botany Blend: Meru Facial (sheet lists price as £2.50 sample size)

Again, I’ve just got too many face oils at the moment that I haven’t had a chance to use this.

Zerreau: Coconut Towel Off Shampoo (sheet lists price as £3.99)

This product is a hybrid dry shampoo that cleans your hair without using water. Spray the foam on and towel off.

This sounds like a great idea and I am looking forward to trying it out. I imagine festival goers would love it and it could be handy to freshen up down the beach. It may be useful at hospital or those early days with a newborn where you can’t tear yourself away from your little one or think straight due to no sleep.

As you can see from the photo, they’ve also included a discount for their new towel off body foam!

Dermadeli: Rejuvinating Toner (sheet lists price as £1.50)

This travel size 10ml toner arrived as I was in need of a toner. I started using it right away and it’s very refreshing. It is also the perfect size to throw in your handbag and freshen up on the go. If I didn’t desperately need it, I may have put it in my hospital bag.

LaRitzy: NUE Eyeshadow Palette (sheet lists prove as £35.99)

This is a full size palette of everyday nude shades to create a variety of looks that would suit most people for daytime or evening.

I was looking forward to this product as they gave a teaser and I am low on eyeshadow. However, my first impressions of the packaging hasn’t blown me away. The plastic casing looks a little cheap and mine has a scratch on the front.

Hurraw: Sun Lip Balm SPF15 (sheet lists price as £3.99)

I had this balm last summer and loved it. I was disappointed when hunting for my summer essentials that I couldn’t find it and bought any SPF lip product on the high street.

What I love about THIS product is the added SPF protection, the organic ingredients and how good it feels.

The Vintage Cosmetics: Matchbox Mini Emery Boards (sheet lists price as £3.95)

These are just really pretty. I recently broke my Ruby & Millie glass file that I loved for years and keep forgetting to get a new file. These will get used. Did I point out how pretty they are?

Chewsy: 100% Natural Chewing Gum (sheet lists price as £1.25)

This is a bonus item that Pip have included in addition to the five products promised. What makes this gum special is the ingredients are 100% natural and sugar free.

I decided to give it a go whilst taking the pics and it is really yummy. It has a fresh minty taste with a little zest. I did find myself popping bubbles and it worked but is really stick and I had to wash it off my lips. Lol ?

I haven’t tried out as it has a warning not to be used during pregnancy. It is in my hospital bag for after labour. It smells good and I’m sure it will pick me up and freshen me up after all the pushing.

MoYou: Nail Plate, Stamp & Scraper (sheet lists price as £9.99)

I was so excited to receive this as I am awful at painting my nail. I watched the tutorial videos on how to use and how to avoid common mistakes. I bought new polish by…..

Sadly, when I attempted to create beautiful nail designs as promised… It didn’t work. My polish may not be suitable. I’ll try again with other brands but I was very disappointed. Currently a fail ?.

Bloomtown: Roll on infused oil (sheet lists price as £4.80)

This I love. The smell is gentle and calming. It’s also organic and has only natural ingredients.

I’m taking it to hospital with me to use as my perfume as the little size is very handy. I would buy this again.

Glo By Glory: Semi Matte Liquid Lipstick (website & sheet lists price as £16.99)

I was really pleased to receive this but only used it twice. Firstly, the colour is a tad dark for me. Secondly, I’ve found it really messy to apply. Being a dark colour it is very unforgiving. I don’t want to look like Mary Sanderson from Hovus Pocus!

Would I recommend?

Sadly, the two main beauty products this month were not a success with me. I shall continue to subscribe to The Pip Box and really like the reward scheme, supporting a charity and discovering more cruelty free brands.

I think when I am on maternity leave I will have to pause my subscription but this will give a chance to rebut some of the wonderful products I have discovered through Pip. I’m still subscribed for now, so I’ll enjoy it while I can.

A.S Apothecary: Wild Beauty Balm (website lists price at £42 for 30mls & sheet lists price as £21.00)

This is an everything balm. The brand hand make all their products using natural ingredients. They think of the way they do this as an artistic or meditative process. They even create bespoke products for individuals as one of their services.

Just Be Botanicals: Loved Aromatherapy Chocolate (website & sheet lists price as £2.75)

I’m not really a fan of dark chocolate. I think I’ll pop round to see my mum and share it with her. I’ll try a tiny piece to check if I’m missing out but I think it will be more her thing than mine.

I checked their website and they do different chocolate like milk or white (more me) and a ton of other beauty products, tea and home-ware. They appear to be pretty big – I’m surprised I’ve never come across them.

Isla Apothecary: Neroli Body oil (website lists price as £32 for 100mls & sheet lists price as £4.50)

This body oil was the winner of the Beauty Shortlist Awards 2018 for best Body Oil. It sounds very promising and I look forward to using this as specially as one of the benefits is preventing stretch marks which is great as I am in my third trimester of pregnancy and need to improve on remembering to use a body oil.

Bodhi & Birch: Desert Rose Facial Oil (website lists price as £38 for 15mls and sheet lists price as £9.95)

This facial oil also won the Beauty Shortlist Awards 2018. I do love the scent of rose so perhaps this face oil will be a winner with me too. This oil is designed to even skin tone, boost cellular regeneration and diminish age blemishes.

This certainly looks like the sort of cleaner that I love. I do have a few cleansers on the go at the moment so I am not sure I’ll get a chance to use it this month but I’ll try to give it a try just so I can let you know my thoughts at the end of the month.

Roques O’Neil: Himalayan Detox Bath Salts (website and sheet lists price as £10.00 travel size)

There is a warning on website to say that this product is not safe to use during pregnancy – perhaps because it is designed to make you sleepy and pregnant women are already struggling to stay away.

However, I’ve read that a salt bath is very healing after birth so I’ll use it when I return from hospital as a little pamper.

Botany Blend: Meru Facial (sheet lists price as £2.50 sample size)

This facial oil was the winner of the Beauty Shortlist Awards 2018 for Editors Choice. Another award winner and appears to be suitable for all skin types for reducing aging. I hope the sample will be enough to get a good idea of what I think of the product.

Would I recommend?

Once again this is another great box, introducing the sort of brands I want to know and use. Everything feels like good quality and was beautifully wrapped.

All the products meet the promise of clean, green and cruelty-free – so if that’s something you desire, this is a great box for you.

I’ve had a month to use the products I received and share my thoughts.

This is how I got on using the products from my April box:

Wild Source: Radiance Mask (website RRP £24.00 & sheet lists price as £15.00)

I’ve not had a chance to use this. Mixing up a face mask whilst my little boy was being sick didn’t seem like a good idea. I feel like I’ve constantly been doing laundry this month and I forgot face masks even exist.

Mono Naturoils: Rose & Cucumber Cleansing Oil (website & sheet lists price as £20.00)

I have used this oil almost everyday and love it. It is a bit rich on a hot day but my skin has been less problematic when I have used it. My skin is definitely more hydrated by this product.

Mono Naturoils: Facial Steam (This trial size is a gift from the founder of Mono. No price is given.)

I still haven’t had a chance to use this. I have been a little stressed at work this month and it has resulted in me being too tired to even pamper myself. I really want to use it and I got as far as taking it to the kettle.

Naissance: Certified Organic Rosehip Oil (website & sheet list price as £8.99)

I haven’t used it. I don’t feel I need it at the moment so it is just sitting in my bathroom cabinet until I do.

Green People: Quinoa & Calendula Shower Gel (website RRP £9.99 (100ml), £4.00 on the sheet for sample size)

I have used this every time I’ve had a shower. I can’t decide if I like the smell or not but it is friendly to my skin. I’d definitely try other Green People products but doubt I’ll replace this one when it is used up.

Anita Grant: Vanilla Cocoa Body Butter Sample (website & sheet RRP £3.45 for 15g sample size)

I can’t use this. It smells too edible and makes me hungry. I really like the brand, it has a very luxurious feel to the products and I am keen to check out more they have to offer.

Anita Grant: Coconut Rosewood Dry Oil (website & sheet RRP £2.99 for 15ml)

Maybe this product is the reason my skin is looking so good. Every time my skin looks a little stressed I’ve dabbed a little of this oil on. It feels lovely on my skin. I wasn’t sure I’d have a need for this but I really love it and would buy again. Did I mention how good it smells? Mmm….

Conscious Skincare: Shampoo (sheet lists price as £3.99)

I can’t find either the shampoo or the conditioner on their website so I am assuming that they are new products (there are other scents available though).

The product clearly states that if you are pregnant you should consult your doctor before use! This is a bit alarming but at least they are clear about this rather that hide the information away. As I am currently pregnant, I won’t be trying this product this month. Instead, I plan to put it in my hospital bag to use after delivery as they are both a handy travel size.

MoYou: Nail Plate, Stamp & Scraper (sheet lists price as £9.99)

I am really excited to give this a go. I feel need to buy another colour polish like white or gold to be the print as all my current polishes are very ‘samey’. After pay day, I guess I’ll have to treat myself to a new nail polish.

Bloomtown: Roll on infused oil (sheet lists price as £4.80)

I already have a few products by this brand. They donate 10% of their profits to environmental and social causes. The brand is from Cornwall, UK and started in 2016 and already winning awards for their products.

I had quick sniff and it smells lovely. It reminds me of my favourite Rose perfume by Acorelle (I don’t recommend them for their sun-care products). I love how affordable Bloomtown make their products and how ethical the brand is. I can’t wait to start using this product.

Glo By Glory: Semi Matte Liquid Lipstick (website & sheet lists price as £16.99)

The brand is from America and all the prices are in dollars. One of the first things they say is ‘We are feminine’ but they also say their products are for men. They are vegan and cruelty the free.

The lipstick is available in 4 shades, the shade I have is Sugar Dumpling (described as a dusty rose nude). I’ve tried it on and it is a very dark brown against my pale skin and a bit messy and unforgiving. I’ll keep trying it to see if I get better with practice and looks better with a full face of makeup. I’ll also test how well it stays on.

The Konjac Sponge Co: Body Sponge (website RRP £29.00, Sheet lists price as £11.99)

I never would have though to buy a sponge or that I would love it so much but this is the best sponge I have ever used. Even my 4 year old could tell the quality and insist on using this in the shower over his fun character flannels. I plan on buying the whole family one each.

Weleda: Evening Primrose Body Oil (website RRP £24.95 full size, Sheet lists price as £3.99 sample size)

I haven’t used it. I have do have a lot of body oils on the go at the moment and really appreciate the travel size of this sample. I am putting it in my maternity bag for use after my shower in hospital.

FRUU: Colour Balm in Strawberry (website & sheet lists price as £4.99)

I’ve been using this almost every day. It is moisturising and fun to have a pop of colour. The pink-coral shade is a little bright for me but the colour doesn’t last long. I will use it up but if I rebuy, I will try a different shade (there is 8 to choose from).

Balade En Provence: Apple Hand Cream (website & sheet lists price as £9.99)

This smells so good. I haven’t used it much as I neglect caring for my hands. I’m sure that once the baby is here and I’m cleaning my hands after nappy changes, this will be in regular use. I also love the cute apple design of the pot and decided that it would make a lovely gift for my sons key workers at nursery as he graduates this summer and my little boy will start school in September.

Peony Cosmetics: Pink Glow Luminizing Stick (website RRP $22.00, sheet lists price as £16.99)

This product is fine but I have really pale skin and the colour just doesn’t show up on me. I’ve had this problem with other highlighters. I’ve used it a few times as it has a very subtle shimmer on my skin but isn’t light enough to highlight for me. It is friendly to my skin – no irritation or doing weird stuff like flaking – so I think if you have darker skin then this could be great for you.

Would I recommend?

I continue to subscribe to The Pip Box and really like the reward scheme, supporting a charity and discovering more cruelty free brands.

I am disappointed that I cannot use the shampoo and conditioner because I am pregnant but I’ll stick them in my hospital bag as they are a good travel size. I’m most excited this month about trying trying the nail art as I never give my hands any attention – I’ll try to take some pics on how I get on.

Tropic Opportunity Night

My local ambassador for the brand posted on Facebook that Tropic was holding an event nearby for everyone to get together and learn more about the brand (there would be freebies). I decided that as the venue was easy to get to, it would be fun to do something grown up and for me. Together with a friend, on Tuesday, 15 May 2018, we attended to hear about how Tropics began.

The story

Susie Ma (the founder and creator) has quite a humble beginning. She moved to the UK and as a teen, she’d help out her mum at Camden market selling toys. Her family came from Australia and enjoyed creating their own beauty recipes with natural products.

One day, Susie bought some jam jars to market and mixed up a batch of her moisturiser and sold it at the stall for £20 a pot (this was a few decades ago and even for London that isn’t cheap) and they sold out fast! Susie and her family realised that she was onto something and she had to make more. Susie kept selling her jar until she had enough to help her mum buy her first home.

One of her friends told her about a TV show called The Apprentice where you pitch your product to sponsors. Susie got on the show but didn’t win. However, Lord Alan Sugar’s wife was so taken by the cream he was encouraged to reach out to her to work on a deal.

Most retail products have to be filled with certain chemicals to retain their shelf life. Susie didn’t want to do this as she wished to keep the products clear. This caused a problem and they had to find another way to market the brand without retail. Susie then went with a social selling platform.

She didn’t want her ambassadors to feel pressured into sales as she was confident her products would sell themselves. She allows her employees to work flexibly – they can work as much or as little as they want or are able to. This is very appealing to people with other commitments (like parents or carers) or those that wish to wind down but can’t get their state pension because the government have upped the age. It also appeals to those that love beauty and want to support an ethical brand.

Susie likes to reward all her ambassadors and there are prizes for her team at whatever level they are at. The ambassadors who came to the event shared with us their experience of the Glammies, free holidays and other perks for hitting a target. All of them spoke about how they don’t feel pressured or tied in.

We were told Susie is in the process of revamping the makeup to give it a new look. There are lots of people speculating that her next project will be a baby and child range. Although, many guests shared what products they already use on their kids (for example, the Frangipani body wash).

Reflecting

I must admit, after hearing the heartwarming story of how Tropics began and Susie’s values, I love the brand even more. I was very tempted to sign up as an ambassador but I am about to go on maternity leave so I think it is best I simply continue as a loyal customer for now.

I went on to buy the full-size versions of the cleaners, toner and moisturiser. When I placed the order, my local ambassador had a deal on. Everyone who placed an order that week got added to a raffle and they got 10% of all orders placed off their bill. This resulted in my getting most of my order for free!

My husband stole the moisturiser (RRP £22) and when it ran out he had the cheek to ask me to buy more. So, when I placed my order, I decided to treat myself to the Soothe The Senses body oil (RRP £28). My wedding flower was Frangipani so I’ve had my eye on this for a little while. Once again, my local ambassador had a deal on! When I received my order, I had a travel size version of the Wild Mint, Lime and Pineapple body wash and body puff.

Review: The Pip Box (April)

What is The Pip Box?

It is a beauty subscription box with a selection of cruelty free products. The box contains a selection of five products – skincare, body care, makeup and occasionally a sweet treat too.A donation from the cost of the box goes to an animal friendly charity (This month is Animal Free Research). In addition, you earn loyalty points for each purchase which can then be used for money off future boxes.

The Konjac Sponge Co: Body Sponge (website RRP £29.00, Sheet lists price as £11.99)

This wasn’t an easy product to photograph. It’s also a product you would not expect to have won so many awards but this sponge has!

It 100% natural, biodegradable and despite being gentle it is able to deliver a deep cleanse and boost circulation.

This sounds amazing and I’m putting it in my shower right away.

Weleda: Evening Primrose Body Oil (website RRP £24.95 full size, Sheet lists price as £3.99 sample size)

I really like this brand as they’ve been creating natural products for a long time now.

It’s described as being ideal for dry/mature skin. I’m hoping that it’s going to prove beneficial for a growing pregnant tummy. I don’t suffer with stretch marks but I am living oils at the moment as a precaution.

FRUU: Colour Balm in Strawberry (website & sheet lists price as £4.99)

Wow, I wasn’t expecting the balm to be so pigmented. It’s like a lipstick but really soothing, nourishing and smells delicious.

I love the colour but saw there are more shades to try on their site! This is a brand I’ve not heard of before and pleased to discover.

Balade En Provence: Apple Hand Cream (website & sheet lists price as £9.99)

This is another new brand to me. That produce vegan skincare with natural ingredients. I think they are relatively new as there is currently only two products.

I love the cute ’apple’ shaped jar the hand cream comes in. The other product they do is a pear hand cream in a pear jar. I’m excited to try this product to see if it is as good as not looks and I want to leave it out somewhere so I can show it off to guests.

Peony Cosmetics: Pink Glow Luminizing Stick (website RRP $22.00, sheet lists price as £16.99)

It uses natural ingredients (92%), gluten free, paraben free and cruelty free.

The product had fallen out the tube when I first got it out the box. I pushed it back in the shaft and it fixed it. *phew*

The only highlighter I currently have is my RMS one and it’s almost run out. This will be a useful addition to my makeup. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Dr Botanicals: Tropical Invigorating Cream (website RRP £29.00, Sheet lists price as £44.00)

This really light moisturizer has been a joy to use on those really hot days. I do find I have to be ever so careful squeezing the tube as the gentlest touch will release a generous amount – either that or I am very heavy handed. I still can’t get over how beautiful it is. I love seeing this tube in bathroom cabinet.

Saturated Colour: Make Me Matt (website and sheet RRP £8.00) and Moisturising Lipstick – Naked Pink (website and sheet RRP £7.00)

I’ve found the ‘Make Me Matt’ quite dry so I haven’t really used it much. It is a useful product to hang onto for any occasion when I need to make a lipstick have a matt lip. However, I have been wearing the lipstick on its own, most days. I really like the colour. It is a strong pink and very pretty.

Okko Skincare: ‘Try me’ Natural foot balm stick (£21.00 RRP for 50g on the website, £3 on the sheet for 4.5g ‘try me’ size)

I don’t really suffer with cracked heels so I haven’t felt the need to use this product much but it was a lovely treat. I still think I have another use left in the ‘try me’ size, I will use it again.

Raw-Ganic: Refreshing Aloe and Green Tea Facial Wipes (£2.99 on the sheet and website)

I was planning to save these for my maternity bag but I really like it. Especially, when I am tired at the long day and can’t be bothered to spend ages in the bathroom – I just want to go to bed. These are so quick and easy and have a nice gentle smell. I will be buying this product again.

Would I recommend?

I am a regular subscriber to The Pip Box and never been disappointed by the contents. I really like the new reward scheme, supporting a charity and discovering more cruelty free brands.

The hand cream looks really cute. I’ve tried the highlighter and lip balm and they are beautiful universal colours that would suit most people. I can see myself using all these products. I am really happy with what I got.
